The item
Three squares: proven in human trials. Two: a strong signal. One: early human data. Striped: the trials disagree.
Start today
- Set a phone alarm 8.8 hours before your bedtime and make it your last-coffee bell.
- The studies used 400 mg a day, with no side effects found in healthy adults.
How you'll know it's working
- Track
- Total sleep time. Caffeine cut 45 minutes off the night and added 9 minutes to falling asleep.
- When to judge
- The same night.
Why it works
It does not supply energy. It blocks the signal for tiredness. Adenosine builds up across waking hours and causes drowsiness by docking at its receptors. Caffeine is close enough in shape to sit in those sites without switching them on. So the calming signal never lands, and nerve firing rises. Its other actions need doses well above normal intake and add little to what people actually feel.
The doses the studies used
| Study / Context | Route | Dose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Healthy adults - intake with no side effects found (review of the trials) | Oral | Up to 400 mg a day | Daily intake |
