Why it works
Vitamin D is a hormone, not a classic vitamin. UVB light makes it in the skin. Then the liver and kidney convert it in two steps into the active form. That form binds a receptor in the cell nucleus and controls hundreds of genes. The receptor sits in tissues far beyond bone, which is why low levels track with so many conditions. It is also why turning those links into benefits proven in trials has been so hard outside bone health.
