When to see a doctor
  • Call 911 now: a red eye with changes to your sight, halos around lights, or light that hurts. The same for a severe headache with nausea or vomiting, a very dark red eye, or one pupil bigger than the other.
  • Call 911 now: an eye injury, something stuck in the eye, or a chemical in it. Do not drive yourself.
  • Urgent care or your eye doctor today: a very painful red eye, or a red eye while you wear contact lenses. It can be an infection.
  • Urgent care or your doctor today: one or both eyes very red, with pain or sensitivity to light.
  • Today (the team that operated): a red eye after recent eye surgery.
  • Urgent care or your doctor the same day: whites that look yellow rather than red. It needs liver and bilirubin blood tests.
  • Your doctor or an eye doctor: one red eye, or a red patch, that has not settled in a few days. One eye or both is a main sign doctors use; everyday conjunctivitis usually affects both.
  • An eye doctor: a bump or growth on the white that changes size, shape or color.
  • Your doctor or an eye doctor: red eyes with a sticky or yellow-green discharge, or eyes red for longer than 1 to 2 days.
  • A doctor: a red patch while you take blood thinners.
  • Your doctor: sore, crusty lids that do not improve with daily cleaning, or red eyes with a face that flushes.
  • Stop any redness drop and see a doctor: eye pain, changed vision, or redness that continues or lasts beyond the label's limit.

I am not a doctor. This is not medical advice. This is self-education. Every dose and strength on this page is the one a trial or a label used, quoted from it. It is not a prescription. Talk to a physician who has your history before any prescription medicine. A red eye with pain, light sensitivity or changed sight: see a doctor first.
