When to see a doctor
- Fainting, a racing or uneven heartbeat, muscle weakness or a fit after vomiting or laxatives: call 911 or go to the ER now. It can be a dangerous salt imbalance.
- Making yourself sick, using laxatives or water tablets, not eating for long periods, or exercising excessively after binges: see your doctor this week. That points to bulimia, and you should be referred on to an eating disorder service.
- Regularly eating a lot fast and not being able to stop, often in secret, with shame after: see your doctor as soon as you can. It may be binge eating disorder, which is treatable.
- Low mood, no interest or no enjoyment most of the day, every day, for more than 2 weeks: see your doctor.
- Bingeing that has not eased after 4 weeks of the self-help, or eating far past full and feeling out of control most weeks: see your doctor soon. Binge eating disorder is common and treatable.
