When to see a doctor
  • Hearing things that are not there, or beliefs others cannot talk you out of. Get help the same day.
  • On lithium: vomiting, diarrhea, shaking, unsteadiness or confusion, get help the same day. On lamotrigine: any rash, call the doctor that day.
  • Highs lasting 4 days or more: lots of energy, little need for sleep, racing thoughts, talking fast, feeling overly confident, big spending or risks. See your doctor and ask for a specialist assessment.
  • Mania, severe depression, or any danger to yourself or others: this needs an urgent specialist assessment.
  • Extreme mood changes that last a long time or wreck your everyday life. See your doctor.
  • Swings with a racing heart, shaking, sweating, feeling hot or weight loss: ask for a thyroid test.
  • On anabolic steroids or more testosterone than prescribed, or low after coming off: tell your doctor.
  • Loud snoring, gasping or choking in sleep, and tired all day with mood swings: ask about Sleep apnea.
  • Swings or low mood since starting a medicine: isotretinoin for acne, finasteride for hair loss, or steroid tablets such as prednisolone. Tell the doctor. Never stop steroid tablets suddenly.
  • Before any antidepressant, tell the doctor about any highs. The labels say to screen for bipolar disorder first.

I am not a doctor. This is not medical advice. This is self-education. Every dose on this page is the one a label or trial used, quoted from it. It is not a prescription. Talk to a physician who has your history before any medicine here.
