When to see a doctor
- Tinnitus with sudden hearing loss, a drooping or weak face, or a spinning feeling (vertigo), or after a head injury: call 911 or go to the ER now. Do not drive yourself.
- Hearing loss that came on suddenly, over 3 days or less, in the past 30 days, with or without ringing: see a doctor the same day. It is a medical emergency, and treatment works best early.
- Muffled hearing or ringing that persists after a loud gig or a bang: see a doctor the same day. It can be sudden hearing loss.
- Hearing that is getting worse over days or weeks, or with earache or discharge: see urgent care or your doctor today.
- New or worse anxiety, agitation or dark thoughts after starting an antidepressant or changing the dose: call the doctor right away.
- Tinnitus that beats in time with your pulse: see urgent care or your doctor today. It needs imaging.
- Ringing in one ear only, or with hearing loss in one ear more than the other: see your doctor and ask about referral and a scan.
- Ringing that stops you carrying out your usual day even after help from your doctor: ask for referral to a tinnitus service within 2 weeks.
- New ringing after starting a medicine: call the doctor. Do not stop a prescribed medicine yourself.
