When to see a doctor
  • Call 911 now: you suddenly cannot see from one or both eyes, or you suddenly have severe eye pain.
  • Call 911 now: a red eye with changes to your sight, light that hurts, a severe headache and feeling nauseous, a very dark red eye, or one pupil bigger than the other.
  • Call 911 now: an eye injury, something stuck in the eye, or a chemical in it.
  • See someone today for new flashes or floaters, a sudden burst of them, or a dark curtain across your vision. The same goes for floaters that start after eye surgery or an eye injury. An urgent eye doctor or urgent care today. In the US, an eye doctor within 24 hours.
  • Urgent care or your doctor today: a very painful red eye, or a red eye while you wear contact lenses. It can be an infection.
  • Urgent care or your doctor today: blurred or double vision that has come on, or eyes that are painful in bright light.
  • An eye doctor or your regular doctor: dry eyes that last a few weeks despite the home moves, or any change in the shape of your eyelids.
  • A doctor: dry eyes with a dry mouth and painful, stiff or swollen joints.

I am not a doctor. This is not medical advice. This is self-education. Every dose on this page is the one a trial or a label used, quoted from it. It is not a prescription. Talk to a physician who has your history before any medicine or procedure. Sudden loss of sight or severe eye pain: call 911.
