When to see a doctor
- Call 911 or go to the ER now: bleeding that will not stop, a lot of blood or large clots, or severe pain. Bleeding with dizziness or fainting.
- Urgent care or your doctor today: black or dark red poop, or bloody diarrhea. Black, tarry poop: 911 or the ER.
- Urgent care or your doctor today: piles with a very high temperature or feeling shivery and unwell, pus leaking, or painless bleeding from your butt.
- Within 3 days: a sudden hard, purple, very painful lump at the edge of the anus. It may be a clot that can be removed.
- Your doctor: blood mixed into your poop, a new change in how you go, weight loss without trying, or feeling tired and short of breath.
- Your doctor: blood or mucus with belly pain or bloating that keeps coming back, a close relative who had bowel cancer, or low iron.
- Your doctor: piles getting worse or no better after home treatment, piles that keep coming back, or a change around the anus that is new for you.
I am not a doctor. This is not medical advice. This is self-education. Every dose on this page is the one a trial or a label used, quoted from it. It is not a prescription. Talk to a physician who has your history before any medicine or procedure. Dark blood, blood mixed into your poop, a new change in how you go, or weight loss without trying: see a doctor first.
