When to see a doctor
  • Regularly eating a lot fast and not being able to stop, often in secret, with shame after: see your doctor as soon as you can. It may be binge eating disorder, which is treatable.
  • Making yourself sick, using laxatives or water pills, or not eating for long periods after binges: see your doctor. That points to bulimia.
  • Waking in the night and needing to eat to get back to sleep, most nights: tell your doctor.
  • Always thirsty, peeing more than usual, very tired, or losing weight without trying: see your doctor for a blood sugar test.
  • Low mood, no interest or no enjoyment most of the day, every day, for more than 2 weeks: see your doctor.
  • Appetite up since starting a medicine: speak to a pharmacist or the doctor, and keep taking it unless told to stop.
  • Bingeing that has not eased after 4 weeks of the self-help, or eating far past full and feeling out of control most weeks: see your doctor soon. Binge eating disorder is common and treatable.
