When to see a doctor
- Get help now for very bad joint pain after a fall or injury. The same for a joint out of place, one you cannot put weight on, or tingling or numbness. Call 911 or go to the ER.
- A hot, swollen or red joint, or joint pain with a fever or feeling unwell: urgent care today. It may be an infected joint.
- A knee that locks, gives way, or is badly swollen: get advice from urgent care or your doctor now.
- Joints stiff for more than 30 minutes after waking, stiffness on both sides of the body, or swollen joints: see your doctor. It can be inflammatory arthritis.
- Low back stiffness that is worst in the morning and at night, eases with exercise, and aches around the buttocks, starting between 18 and 40: see your doctor about ankylosing spondylitis.
- Joint pain stopping normal activities or sleep, or not better after 2 weeks of home care: see your doctor. In many areas you can refer yourself to a physical therapist.
- New back or joint pain on isotretinoin, the acne tablet: tell the doctor who prescribes it.
