When to see a doctor
- Call 911 now: bleeding from your butt that will not stop, a lot of blood or clots, vomiting blood, or severe belly pain.
- Urgent care or your doctor today: black or dark red poop, or bloody diarrhea. Black, tarry poop: 911 or the ER.
- Urgent care or your doctor today: weight loss for no reason, bleeding from your butt, a hard lump or swelling in your belly, or breathless, pale and with palpitations.
- Your doctor: blood or mucus in your poop, diarrhea lasting more than 7 days, or belly pain or bloating that keeps coming back. These can be signs of inflammatory bowel disease.
- Your doctor: symptoms for over 4 weeks, to check it is irritable bowel and run the tests. Keep eating gluten until the celiac test.
- Your doctor: a close relative with bowel cancer or celiac disease, or low iron on a blood test.
- Your doctor before pharmacy medicines: past 40 with new or changed symptoms, feeling nauseous, losing weight, trouble peeing, or recent travel abroad.
I am not a doctor. This is not medical advice. This is self-education. Every dose on this page is the one a trial or a label used, quoted from it. It is not a prescription. Talk to a physician who has your history before any medicine or procedure. Blood in your poop, black poop, or weight loss without trying: see a doctor first.
