When to see a doctor
- Call 911 now: chest pain that does not go away, or spreads to the arm, neck, jaw or back, with sweating or breathlessness.
- Your doctor or dermatologist: a round or oval smooth bald patch in the beard where hair grew before. It may be alopecia areata.
- Your doctor: red, swollen skin in the beard with pus bumps, weeping skin or hair falling out. It may be beard ringworm, which needs tablets.
- Your doctor: a thin beard with low sex drive, weaker erections, loss of body hair, small testes or breast growth. Ask for two morning testosterone tests.
- Stop minoxidil and see a doctor: a racing heart, faintness or dizziness, sudden weight gain, or swollen hands or feet.
- A doctor before minoxidil: high blood pressure, treated or not, heart disease, or an irregular heartbeat.
I am not a doctor. This is not medical advice. This is self-education. Every dose and strength on this page is the one a trial or a label used, quoted from it. It is not a prescription. Minoxidil on the face is off-label. Talk to a physician who has your history before any prescription medicine. Round smooth patches or red, sore bumps in the beard: see a doctor first.
