When to see a doctor
  • Fruity breath (like pear drops or nail polish remover) with thirst, peeing a lot, or feeling sleepy or confused: it may be diabetic ketoacidosis. Call 911 now, 24/7.
  • Intense toothache or gum pain, a swollen face or jaw, or a high temperature: it may be an abscess. An urgent dentist or urgent care after hours. Hard to breathe, speak or swallow: 911.
  • Gums that suddenly turn painful and ulcerated, with a bad taste, bad breath or a fever: it may be necrotizing gum disease. An urgent dentist, or urgent care after hours.
  • Bad breath with fever, cough, or face pain with discharge from the nose: see a doctor.
  • A mouth ulcer lasting more than 3 weeks, a red or white patch, or a lump in your mouth, lip, neck or throat: see your doctor or dentist.
  • Tonsil stones with pain, trouble swallowing or ear pain that does not improve: see a doctor.
  • Bad breath that lasts after a few weeks of self-care, or with painful, bleeding or swollen gums, toothache or wobbly teeth: see a dentist.
