Also called Cutting down on alcohol, Cutting back on drinking, Drinking too much, Binge drinking
Who it's forA man who drinks more than he means to, on weekends that run on or most nights, and wants to cut down or stop.
When to see a doctor
- Severe withdrawal, with visible shaking, confusion, seeing or hearing things that are not there, or a seizure: call 911 or go to the ER.
- Yellow skin or eyes, vomiting blood, black sticky poop, belly pain, or sudden confusion: call 911 or go to the ER.
- Shaking, sweating, anxiety, poor sleep or feeling nauseous when you cut down, or needing a drink when you wake: your body is dependent. Get medical help before you stop.
- Never stop suddenly after heavy daily drinking. It can be very dangerous: withdrawal can bring seizures and delirium tremens.
- A past withdrawal seizure or delirium tremens, epilepsy, or drinking over 17 US standard drinks (30 UK units) a day: the withdrawal belongs in a hospital or residential unit.
- Coming off benzodiazepines (tranquilizers such as diazepam) at the same time as alcohol: that withdrawal also belongs in a hospital or residential unit.
- Feeling very tired, less hungry, losing weight, or pain in the upper right of your belly: see your doctor. These can be early liver damage.
- Drinking that keeps causing problems with your health, work or relationships, or blackouts: see your doctor or an alcohol support service.
I am not a doctor. This is not medical advice. This is self-education. Every dose on this page is the one a trial or a label used, quoted from the source. It is not a prescription. Talk to a physician who has your history before anything in the With a doctor group. Never stop heavy daily drinking suddenly without medical help.
