Who it's forA man who wants steady energy through the day and a healthy blood sugar, or whose A1c, fasting glucose or liver test has started to creep up.
When to see a doctor
- Those signs getting worse fast, with belly pain, throwing up, fast deep breathing, or feeling sleepy or confused. Call emergency services or go to an emergency department now: it can be diabetic ketoacidosis.
- An A1c of 6.5% or more, or a fasting glucose of 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or more. That is the diabetes range.
- Feeling very tired, peeing more than usual, always thirsty, or losing weight without trying.
- Shaking, sweating, a fast heartbeat and confusion when you do not have diabetes. These are signs of low blood sugar.
- Pain or discomfort under the right side of your ribs, or a blood test showing a liver problem.
- Taking insulin or any glucose-lowering medicine before a fast, a shake diet or keto. The dose may need to change first.
- Taking steroid tablets, antipsychotics, growth hormone or anabolic steroids. Each can raise blood sugar: tell the doctor, and test.
- Lean and young, with the glucose rising anyway. Ask about type 1 diabetes, including its slow adult form (LADA). An antibody test tells them apart.
- A normal A1c but a strong family history or other risk. Ask for a two-hour oral glucose tolerance test: it finds more cases. 200 mg/dL or more at two hours is diabetes.
I am not a doctor. This is not medical advice. This is self-education. Every dose on this page is the one a trial or a label used, quoted from it. It is not a prescription. Talk to a physician who has your history before anything in the With a doctor group. On any medicine for glucose or blood pressure, talk to one before a fast, a shake diet or keto.
