When to see a doctor
- Severe acne that comes with fever or feeling unwell: a doctor the same day.
- Deep, painful lumps or cysts under the skin.
- Acne that is already leaving scars, or dark marks that last.
- Acne that started suddenly with no medicine to blame, or while taking steroids, testosterone or other hormones.
- Widespread red pimples, or a lot of acne on the back or chest: the first treatment there adds a tablet to the creams.
- Acne that is getting you down, or has you avoiding people.
