## How you'll know it's working

Track

How many days the cold lasts, counted from the first symptom

When to judge

Against your usual cold - the trials ran 2.25 days shorter

## Why it works

It is basic machinery, not a drug. Hundreds of enzymes need it, and it forms the core of the zinc-finger proteins that switch genes on and off. Its immune role runs through how T cells develop and work, which is why low zinc raises infection risk. The cold-lozenge effect works a separate way entirely. It depends on a high local level of free zinc in the throat, so swallowing a tablet is not the same treatment.
