## Start today

1. Put 4 sauna sessions in this week's calendar and a glass of water beside each one.

## Why it works

Raising core temperature by a degree or two is a controlled heat stress. The body answers it the way it answers moderate aerobic exercise: heart rate climbs, vessels widen, plasma volume grows, and heat-shock proteins are made. Loading the heart and vessels without loading the body mechanically is how it works. It is what sits behind its link with heart outcomes in studies that tracked people. The tested protocols are specific. The heart-failure trials used infrared sauna at 60 degC for 15 minutes, followed by 30 minutes of warm rest, five times a week for 2-4 weeks. The heat-therapy blood-pressure review pooled 30-90 minute exposures over 10-36 sessions. In the Finnish long-term study, the link tracked dose. It appeared at 4-7 sessions per week and sessions longer than 19 minutes, not at 1 session per week.
