Studied dose

4 mg/day, the dose with the biggest effect · One dose about 3 hours before the intended bedtime

“Take 4 mg three hours before bed. The hour beats the dose.”

## Start today

1. Set a recurring phone alarm for three hours before bed and label it melatonin.

## Why it works

It is a timing signal, not a sedative. The brain's master clock reads light from the eye and holds back its release during daylight, so it rises in darkness. Its two receptors do different jobs. One quiets firing in the clock and helps start sleep. The other shifts the clock's timing. That is why the hour you take it matters more than the size of the dose. Given each at its own best time, 0.5 mg and 3.0 mg shift the clock by a similar amount. For falling asleep, the benefit peaks at around 4 mg taken about three hours before your planned bedtime.
