# Cold Exposure

10 minutes of ice after each session, twice a week for 12 weeks, is the pattern that blunted growth.

Also called Cold Therapy, Cold-Water Immersion, Deliberate Cold Exposure, Cold Thermogenesis, Cold Plunge, Ice Bath

A practice

Who it's forAny man lifting for size who ices after training.

“Plunge on rest days. Keep the ice away from the hours after you lift.”

## Start today

1. Move tonight's post-lift plunge to tomorrow morning.

## Why it works

Skin cold receptors fire the sympathetic nervous system and release norepinephrine. That surge is behind the mood and alertness effects. Repeated exposure recruits brown fat and improves cold tolerance. The gains are real, and more exposure brings more effect. One catch for lifters: an ice bath right after resistance training blunts the growth signaling that builds muscle fiber.

## What was actually tested

The general-population review pooled trials at 7-15 degC with single exposures from 30 seconds to 2 hours. It required immersion at or above chest level. Its largest trial gave 3,018 people a 30-, 60- or 90-second cold shower for 30 days in a row. Post-exercise recovery trials mainly used 11-15 degC, most for 10-20 minutes. Within those ranges, the Sports Med review of the trials found water temperature and exposure time rarely changed the result. The Frontiers review found immersion site and water temperature made no difference to fatigue recovery. One resistance-training study used 10 minutes after each session, twice a week for 12 weeks (Roberts 2015). Another used 15 minutes at 10 degC, three days a week for seven weeks (Fyfe 2019). The cold-shock reflex fades after roughly four immersions.
